International Story Tellers descend on Dublin
On Saturday October 9th 2010, a unique event will take place at The Pillar Room in Dublin’s Rotunda Hospital, the Story Teller Summit. Organised by the International Charity Bazaar Committee, made up of representatives from all international embassies in Ireland, the Story Teller Summit will see three international story tellers provide an evening of entertainment based on their specific traditions of story-telling.
Niall de Burca will represent Ireland at the event that will see international artists Folke Tegetthoff from Austria and Bro Vigga from Denmark bringing their craft that has been seen by audiences world wide to Ireland.
Niall de Búrca
Niall de Búrca is one of Ireland’s finest traditional storytellers. A Galway native, de Burca displayed a talent for narrative from a young age and has, to date, performed throughout Ireland and internationally in theatre, radio and at many festivals including Féile Earraai, the CS Lewis Festival, and The National Children's Book Festival in Ireland as well as at events in Poland, Argentina, Italy, New Zealand and The Netherlands.
From Graz in Austria and with a career that includes time spent studying medicine, education theory, working as a tour manager and songwriter, Folke Tegetthoff is considered a leader in the Austrian tradition in the art of story-telling and has worked around the world as a storyteller, poet, lecturer, festival founder and organiser.
To date, Tegetthoff has published 33 books (1.4 million copies) in 12 languages and distributed throughout the USA, Spain, China, Japan, Mexico, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Turkey, Poland, France, Corea, Indonesia and Portugal.
A familiar figure to young people in Ireland through his “Storytelling As A Tool Of Education” workshops that have run through many Irish schools, de Burca has also received a Medal Of Excellence from the Heidelberg school district in Germany for his work with young authors.
Continuing his work with young people, in January 2004 he produced Blackwater Storystream, a peace and reconciliation initiative using storytelling to link together fifty schools in the border counties of Armagh, Monaghan and Tyrone. Later this year, de Burca will release a collection of tales based on work he has been doing with the National Museum.
Folke Tegetthoff
A well respected integral player in Danish culture, Vigga Bro began her career in 1959 at the Århus Theatre School and since 1964, has been active on the Copenhagen stage playing in a wide repertoire of productions from the Revue to Shakespeare, as well as film and TV.
In 1967-83 she was a member of the theatre troupe Banden (The Gang) in Odense, where she also made her debut as a director, a part of the theatrical field that has ever since been an important element in her career.
Vigga Bro
In recent years she has made a name as a storyteller, and, in 1996 published the book Orkanens øje (Eye of the Hurricane) about the oral narrative form. In 1997 in Odense she premiered her own storytelling production with stories and an adaptation of Karen Blixen’s The Ship-Boy’s Tale.
