The number of people affected by the floods is greater than the combined victims of the tsunami, the 2005 Pakistan earthquake and the Haiti earthquake, says the UN.

Mothers frequently have to choose between watching their children die a slow, agonising death from dehydration or giving them dirty water to drink, full of dangerous bacteria and parasites and just as deadly.
Diarrhoea - caused by contaminated water - is a death sentence for many children. And with no food, families are even resorting to eating grass, because they fear they will starve to death before aid arrives.
UNHCR emergency response teams report shortages of food and medicine. Power and gas supplies have been cut. In many areas, mud in the wells has spoiled the drinking water supply as well.

According to the Pakistan government, more than 248,000 homes have been destroyed or damaged and 1.38 million acres of crop land flooded across Pakistan.
